Why Clarence Avant’s wife, Jacqueline, will never forget her passing

Discover why Jacqueline Avant, the late wife of Clarence Avant, will never be forgotten after her influence on Black culture inspired Netflix to devote Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story to the philanthropist.

Who was Clarence Avant’s wife, Jacqueline?

On Sunday, August 13, 2023, Clarence Alexander Avant, an American music executive, businessman, and film producer, quietly passed away at home in Los Angeles. He was 91 years old.

The tragic news comes almost two years after his wife Jacqueline Avant was shot and killed at their Beverly Hills residence during a break-in.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, she worked as a phlebotomist and hospital technician in New York City. She also modeled at Johnson Publishing Company’s annual fashion show Ebony Fashion Fair. She met her husband as her modeling career was beginning to take off and he was thriving as a music manager, producer, executive, and entrepreneur.

Jacqueline Avant, who was unfortunate to pass away on December 1, 2021, at the age of 81, was born on March 6, 1940, in Jamaica Queens, New York.

According to The New York Times, the tragedy happened when Jacqueline Avant was shot to death during a violent burglary while she was at home with her husband, who police officers discovered holding her head on the ground after she was shot. The murderer received a 190-year prison term in April 2022.

Nicole Avant, a producer, and political activist, and Alexander Devore Avant were born into a 1967 marriage to Clarence Avant.

Nicole Avant posted a message on Instagram on August 5, 2023, to wish her parents a happy anniversary as they marked 56 years of marriage.

Jacqueline Avant’s impact on Black culture

The murder of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant stunned the country, and Hollywood openly lamented her death. She had worked to bring together the realms of Black politics and entertainment.

“Jacquie is described as having a lot of grit, gratitude, and grace,”

Regarding her mother, Nicole Avant said to PEOPLE:

”Before it was fashionable to declare oneself to be a philanthropist, she was one.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Jacquie Avant served on numerous charitable boards over the years, including those for the Neighbours of Watts, the National Organisation for Women’s Entertainment division, and the UCLA International Student Centre (now the UCLA Dashew Centre for International Students and Scholars).

People who knew the pair well regarded Jacqueline Avant as a subdued force who supported her husband in bringing together influential personalities from the sports, entertainment, and political realms, frequently for the good of the less fortunate.

Netflix’s Queen Charlotte was dedicated to Jacqueline Avant

A 2023 Netflix historical movie called Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is devoted to Jacqueline Avant.

Nicole, a former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas and daughter of Jacqueline and Clarence, is wed to Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix.

According to a statement acquired by DigitalSpy from Shonda Rhimes, creator of the Bridgerton television series, Avant served as the model for the Queen Charlotte spin-off:

“But Ted Sarandos calling me and saying, ‘My mother-in-law is crazy with Queen Charlotte,’ really pushed it. Do you want to write a tale about Queen Charlotte? And I answered yes right away. I adored the concept, not just because it was Ted.

“Queen to Be,” the first episode of the series, displays a devotion to Jacqueline Avant as she appears on the screen at the conclusion.
